Feiseanna
Feiseanna
Feiseanna are Irish Dancing competitions and our school organises an Open Feis each year which is certified by the Commission of Irish Dancing in Dublin. Around 300 dancers from all over Europe and even beyond gather to compete at this event. Musicians and adjudicators are brought from Ireland to officiate.
When competitors begin to dance in these competitions, they traditionally wear a costume decided on by their dance school called a Class costume. Each dance school is easily identifiable by their costume. When dancers reach a competition level decided on by the dance school, they can design or choose a costume of their own. Girls wear ornate dresses with long sleeves and a paneled skirt. The skirt panels are often stiffened with cardboard inserts. Boys usually wear a dress shirt, tie or vest, and dress pants or a kilt.
The most important Feiseanna are the "Oireachtas"(pronounced oh-rok-tis) competitions. There are regional Oireachtas competitions in Eastern and Western Canada, Northeast, Midwest, Southern and Western US, plus locations in Mainland Europe, UK, Ireland and Australia. Regional Oireachtas are open only to dancers from their defined region, and serve as qualifying competitions for the World Chanpionships . Important National Oireachtas include North American Nationals (NANs), All Irelands, and All Great Britons. Our dancers travel yearly to compete at these championships.
The most prestigious competition for top dancers is the World Championships. Worlds were held in Glasgow in 2007, Belfast in 2008, Philadelphia in 2009 and Glasgow 2010 for the 40th Anniversary. The World Chaampionships (Oireachtas Rince Na Cruinne) is typically held Easter Week and the venue for 2011 is Dublin. Many of our dancers qualify for this event and place highly.
